    How Does It Work?

    1. Measure the roomLength, width and wall height. The calculator works out the perimeter and multiplies by the height, so you do not need to measure each wall separately.
    2. Subtract the openingsEach door is treated as about 1.8 m² and each window as about 1.5 m². Standard sizes, but adjust the count if yours are unusually large.
    3. Choose coats and coverageTwo coats is normal. Coverage is printed on the tin — use that figure if you have it, since it varies a lot between matt, silk and primer.

    What Is It Used For?

    Paint is sold in fixed tin sizes, so the useful answer is not "how many litres" but "how many tins". This calculator gives both, deducts doors and windows rather than pretending the walls are blank, and multiplies by the number of coats — which is where most rough estimates go wrong, because two coats on a dark wall is really the minimum.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How much paint do I need for a room?

    Work out the wall area — the perimeter times the height — subtract the doors and windows, multiply by the number of coats and divide by the coverage on the tin. For a typical 4.5 × 3.5 m bedroom with two coats that comes to about 6.7 litres, or three 2.5 litre tins.

    How much area does a litre of paint cover?

    Between 10 and 12 m² per litre for most emulsions on a smooth, previously painted wall. Rough plaster, bare masonry and strong colour changes can cut that by a third or more, so use the lower end if in doubt.

    Do I really need two coats?

    Usually yes. One coat rarely gives an even finish, especially over a different colour, on new plaster or with strong pigments such as reds and yellows, which sometimes need three.

    Should I include the ceiling?

    Only if you are painting it, and normally with a different paint. Switch the option on to add the floor area to the total; run the calculation separately if the ceiling paint has different coverage.

    What about doors, frames and skirting?

    Those are usually gloss or satinwood rather than emulsion, and the quantities are small — a single small tin generally covers the woodwork in an ordinary room.

    Why does it round up to whole tins?

    Because you cannot buy 0.4 of a tin, and running out mid-wall means a visible join. The leftover is also useful for touching up scuffs later.
