Gross total (including VAT)

  • Net (excl. VAT)
  • VAT amount
  • Gross (incl. VAT)

How Does It Work?

  1. Choose the directionAdd VAT if you have a price before tax. Remove VAT if the price already includes it and you need the net figure.
  2. Enter the price and the rateThe rate box accepts any percentage — 5, 19, 20, 21, 23 or anything else your country or product category uses.
  3. Read the three amountsNet, VAT and gross are always shown together, which is exactly what an invoice line needs.

What Is It Used For?

Value Added Tax is charged on the net price, so adding it is a multiplication and removing it is a division — a distinction that trips people up constantly. Subtracting 21% from a gross price gives the wrong answer; you have to divide by 1.21. This calculator handles both directions correctly.

  • Issuing an invoice where you know your fee and need the total to charge.
  • Reading a receipt that only shows the gross total and recovering the net amount for bookkeeping.
  • Quoting a client a price with and without tax.
  • Checking a supplier invoice adds up before you pay it.
  • Comparing consumer prices between countries with different VAT rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. At 21%, multiply by 1.21 — so 100 net becomes 121 gross.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. At 21%, divide by 1.21 — so 121 gross is 100 net. Subtracting 21% instead would give 95.59, which is wrong.

Why can I not just subtract the percentage?

Because VAT is calculated on the net price, not on the gross. The tax is a percentage of the smaller number, so reversing it needs a division rather than a subtraction.

Which VAT rate should I use?

It depends on your country and on what you are selling — reduced rates often apply to food, books, transport or energy. The calculator accepts any rate so you can enter the one that applies to your case.

Does this work for sales tax or GST?

Yes, as long as the tax is a simple percentage added to the net price. Add mode gives the total to charge; remove mode recovers the pre-tax amount.

Is this official tax advice?
