How Does It Work?
- Paste your textThe count updates on every keystroke, including emoji and accented letters.
- Pick a limit if you have oneCommon limits for titles, meta descriptions, SMS and social posts are built in, or set your own.
- Trim until it fitsThe remaining allowance turns into an over-count in red as soon as you cross the line.
What Is It Used For?
Character limits are unforgiving: an SEO title gets truncated at around 60 characters, an SMS splits into two messages at 161, and a form may simply refuse to submit. Counting as you edit is faster than pasting somewhere else to find out.
- Writing a page title or meta description that will not be cut off in search results.
- Fitting a social post inside a platform limit.
- Keeping an SMS to a single message.
- Filling in a form field with a strict maximum, such as a job application.
- Checking a database field length before importing data.
Examples
| Where | Limit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| SEO title tag | ~60 characters | Google truncates by pixel width, not exact count |
| Meta description | ~160 characters | Longer text is usually cut in the snippet |
| SMS | 160 characters | Beyond this the message is split and billed twice |
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters | Links count as a fixed length |
| Instagram bio | 150 characters | Line breaks count as characters |
