Frequently Asked Questions

How are words counted?

The text is split on whitespace and any fragment containing a letter or a number counts as a word. Standalone punctuation is ignored, so an em dash between two words does not inflate the count.

Do hyphenated words count as one or two?

One. "State-of-the-art" is a single word here, which matches how most word processors and style guides count it.

How are sentences detected?

By full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and ellipses. Abbreviations such as "e.g." can occasionally add one to the count, so treat sentence numbers as a close estimate.

What counts as a paragraph?

A block of text separated by a blank line. Single line breaks inside a block do not start a new paragraph.

Is there a size limit?

Only your browser memory. Documents of tens of thousands of words count instantly.
