Frequently Asked Questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

One kilogram equals 2.20462 pounds. For a quick estimate, double the kilograms and add ten per cent.

How do I convert pounds to kilograms?

Divide by 2.20462, or multiply by 0.453592. So 154 lb ÷ 2.20462 = 69.9 kg. For a rough figure in your head, halve the pounds and then add back about a tenth: 154 halved is 77, less 10% is around 69.

How many pounds are in a stone?

Exactly 14, so 11 stone 4 pounds is 158 pounds or about 71.7 kilograms. The stone is still used for body weight in the UK and Ireland but almost nowhere else, and it never appears on packaging or in medical records.

Is a pound the same everywhere?

The international avoirdupois pound used here is standard across the UK, the United States and international trade. Older regional pounds differed, but they are no longer in everyday use.

What about ounces?

There are 16 ounces in a pound, so one kilogram is about 35.27 ounces. The ounces figure is shown above for cooking and postage.

What is my weight in stones and pounds?

Convert to pounds, divide by 14 for the stones and keep the remainder as pounds. 70 kg is 154.3 lb, which is 11 stone and about 0.3 lb. The calculator shows that breakdown for you automatically.

Why is the conversion factor such an untidy number?

It is exact, not untidy: the pound is defined as precisely 0.45359237 kg. The figure looks awkward only because the two systems developed independently, so a round number in one is never a round number in the other.
