How many miles are in a kilometer?
One kilometer is 0.621371 miles, so a little under two-thirds of a mile. Multiply kilometers by 0.62 for a quick estimate.
How do I convert miles to kilometers?
Multiply by 1.609344. So 26.2 miles × 1.609 = 42.2 kilometers, the marathon distance. For a quick estimate, add half the number and then a tenth: 26 plus 13 plus 2.6 gives roughly 42.
Is there a mental shortcut?
Yes — the ratio is close to the golden ratio, so consecutive Fibonacci numbers work: 5 km is about 3 miles, 8 km is about 5 miles, 13 km is about 8 miles.
Does the same conversion work for speed?
Yes. Because km/h and mph share the same distance ratio, 100 km/h is 62.1 mph and 60 mph is 96.6 km/h. That is worth remembering when hiring a car abroad, where the speedometer and the road signs may not use the same unit.
